Valencia: 125
Valencia: last dance for the 125's
Two world championships will be decided this weekend at Valencia, but it will also represent the end of the 125cc class, and the total elimination of two-stroke engines from Grand Prix racing.
This change in technical trends began in 2002, when the 500cc two-strokes were replaced by the MotoGP class, and it took another step in 2010, when the 600cc Moto2 machines phased out the 250's. Taking over the entry level class in 2012 will be Moto3, consisting of 250cc four-stroke engines.
The 125cc displacement, having been contested non-stop from 1949 until today, is the category with the largest number of Grand Prix disputed. Before the implementation of age limits, the class was often dominated by "specialists," who often made the most of their small size and light weight. More recently, the class became the definitive proving ground for any young rider with MotoGP ambitions, seeing the likes of Valentino Rossi, Loris Capirossi, Dani Pedrosa, Jorge Lorenzo, Andrea Dovizioso, Casey Stoner and Marco Simoncelli all cut their teeth there.
The early years of the category were dominated by Mondial and MV Agusta, with Carlo Ubbiali winning 5 world championships, from 1955 to 1960, on the latter. The 1960's saw the rise of the Japanese manufacturers, however, and the development of two-stroke technology. From 1961 to 1970, Honda, Yamaha, Suzuki and Kawasaki all took turns at the top, often racing with exotic multi-cylindered designs.
From there it was the Italian marques that returned to prominence, with 13 straight constructors titles divided between Morbidelli, Minarelli, MBA, and Garelli. The bike with the most continued success was the twin-cylinder Garelli 125 GP, which won 6 riders' and 4 constructors' titles in the 1980's, thanks to riders like Angel Nieto, Luca Cadalora, and Fausto Gresini.
A 1988 rules changed limited the class to single-cylinder engines, which paved the way for Honda and Aprilia to dominate. The Italian marque has won 9 of the last 15 world championships, but Honda still holds the outright record with 14 titles.
In terms of rider nationality, the class has been thoroughly dominated by Italy and Spain, with the former counting 23 world champions, and the latter 14.
Grand Prix racing has experienced some significant changes over the last ten years, but the departure of the 125cc class represents the death of a bygone era in racing. The paddock simply won't be the same without the smell of two-stroke exhaust in the air; these lightweight machines, and the fantastic racing they produced, will be sorely missed.
